American Family Association Demands Boycott of Kellogg's Over Pride-Themed Cereal

The American Family Association (AFA), an anti-LGBTQ group, has called for consumers to boycott the multinational food manufacturing company Kellogg Co. because of its limited-edition Pride-themed cereal.

The cereal is named "Together With Pride." Its box features numerous characters who represent Kellogg's other cereals. The cereal is made of berry-flavored rainbow hearts dusted with edible glitter. Its box contains a tear-out "Together Band" where people can declare their pronouns.

Kellogg donates $3 of each box purchased to GLAAD, a media watchdog group that advocates for affirming representations of LGBTQ people in media.

"Each box of Kellogg's sold affirms to the company Kellogg's support for homosexuality ... [in an] effort to push homosexuality to children," the AFA claims in an "Action Alert" on their website.

"Each box of Kellogg's sold (gay branded or not) affirms to the company that Kellogg's support for homosexuality is an acceptable part of their business. We urge you to consider an alternative product to Kellogg's," the AFA's web page states.

The AFA also asks its web visitors to sign a letter to Kellogg's CEO Steve Cahillane.

"Homosexuality is a very dangerous and unhealthy lifestyle," the letter states. "Your decision to promote it could lead untold numbers of children down a path that leads to a very sad and devastating life."

Kellogg's and GLAAD launched the "All Together" cereal campaign in 2018 as a way to mark Spirit Day. Spirit Day, which began in 2010, is an annual LGBTQ awareness day that occurs on the third Thursday of October. Its observers are encouraged to wear purple as a visible protest against anti-LGBTQ bullying.

Previously, Delta Airlines, the retail chain Target, the candy Skittles, the online retailer Amazon and both the Women's and men's National Basketball Association have served as GLAAD's Spirit Day partners.

The AFA has a long history of boycotting companies over LGBTQ-inclusion.

In 2016, the AFA asked people to boycott Target after the retail store announced that they would allow customers to use restrooms that correctly correspond to their gender identities. The Wall Street Journal reported that the company experienced an increase in sales following the boycott.

In December 2019, the AFA's offshoot group, One Million Moms, successfully persuaded the Hallmark Channel to pull a Zola wedding planning ad featuring a lesbian couple kissing at the altar. Hallmark reinstated the ads one day later following a massive public outcry.

The AFA has also called its followers to boycott companies for saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"; Disney for "supporting the homosexual agenda"; Marvel Studios for including a gay superhero in its upcoming Eternals film; Scholastic Books for publishing a book about a transgender child; and many boycotts for similar acts of LGBTQ-inclusion.

The AFA's radio network, American Family Radio, hosts former AFA spokesperson Bryan Fischer. Fischer claims that the German Nazi party was secretly made up of "hardcore homosexuals." Fischer has also called for the wholesale deportation of Muslims living in the United States.

The AFA also has a partnership with the American Center for Law and Justice, a conservative Christian legal group that has worked to ensure that homosexuality remains illegal in Africa.
